The NGO Infocentre, under its “Media Mirror” programme, implements a qualitative monitoring of the media coverage of 2006 Parliamentary Elections.
The monitoring reviews the positioning of the media towards the campaigns of political entities: “For Macedonia Together” and “For Better Macedonia” coalitions, and DUI, DPA, NSDP, VMRO-NP, DOM, ZNP and PEO among the political parties.
The Monitoring includes 12 media, six national daily newspapers and six national television broadcasters: “Vest”, “Vecer”, “Vreme”, “Dnevnik”, “Utrisnki vesnik”, “Fakti”, A1 TV, Kanal 5 TV, MTV 1, MTV2 (News in Albanian), Sitel TV and Telma TV.
The second report, covering the period June 17 to July 8, registered greater support and endorsement in the media for the opposition coalition “For Better Macedonia”, compared to the ruling coalition “For Macedonia Together”.
In particular, the media favoured the leader of VMRO-DPMNE, Nikola Gruevski, who was border-line idolized by the media. To the contrary, the attacks on SDSM concentrated primarily on Vlado Buckovski, the Prime Minister, against whom the media engaged in very personal attacks.
Another strange occurrence was the fact that DPA, over a period of time, was actively supported by two Macedonian language media, while at the same time, non of the Albanian language media included in the monitoring backed this party.
